The Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday may 20 2016, sentenced the former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration Safety Agency, Raymond Temisan Omatseye, to five years in prison over a N1.5bn contract scam. Omatseye was arraigned before the court today May 20 on a 27-count charge bordering on alleged contract variation, bid rigging and awarding contract above his approval limit while he was in office.
Omatseye was appointed by Yar'Adua in July 2009. He was sacked eighteen months later on suspicions of corruption and was subsequently charged to court by EFCC. He went to court with a suit of no case against the EFCC, which he lost.
He was re-arraigned on January 21, 2013, by the EFCC during Goodluck Jonathan's tenure on an amended 27 count charge before Justice Ofili Ajumogobia, where he pleaded not guilty and his trial eventually began.
