Campaign number: 2:
LAGOS STATE TAX WITHHOLDING CAMPAIGN
Details
Following recent scandals like that surrounding the speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly and the AlphaBeta conflict of interest cases, I want to run by you what you think about this: I hope we can start a campaign in Lagos State to ask all Lagos tax payers to withhold paying tax to the state government until they start publishing complete and transparent details of all revenue and expenditure. I think it is an idea that may be able to succeed in Lagos as we have the most sophisticated and elected populace and also since the state government relies very heavily on taxes in order to function.
Whilst it is our duty to pay tax, it is a bigger duty on the government to let us know how and where our taxes are being spent. We will even be happy to give them tools to help record these accounts and display them freely and openly on the Internet, if so required.
I would like us to discuss the viability of running such a campaign; the risks and pitfalls and to start to draw up practical plans/step to start such a campaign.
