Case Summary
On Monday, November 18, 2019, the Maiduguri Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured an 18-month prison sentence for Zanna Dalhatu without the option of a fine before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri.
Full story
His journey to prison began when he demanded a N7 million bribe and attempted to obtain the same sum from Shuaibu Mohammed, the Chief Accountant of the Borno State Road Maintenance Agency (BORMA), in order to facilitate the dismissal of a case against the agency's staff. He was trailed and arrested while attempting to collect the bribe sum.
While the EFCC presented three witnesses to prove its case against him, his defense counsel, Zanna Hamza, chose a "no case submission," which the court dismissed and ordered him to open his defense.
Unsatisfied with the ruling, the defendant appealed to the Appeal Court, Jos Division, which upheld the Borno State High Court's ruling on the no case submission against his wishes.
After the prosecution amended the charge, he pleaded guilty and was convicted and sentenced accordingly.
