Case Summary
Chuma Nzeribe, a former member of the House of Representatives, was found guilty of impersonation and forgery on Monday by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja.
Full story
Nzeribe was initially charged by the EFCC on October 16, 2020, with four counts relating to possession of a fraudulent document, forgery, passing it off as genuine, and cheating by personation, all of which are crimes punishable under sections 6, 8(b), and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.
When the allegations were read to him, he entered a plea of not guilty, establishing the terms of his entire trial. Maryam Aminu Ahmad, the prosecutor, called five witnesses against the defendant during the trial.
The case was adjourned for judgment following the prosecution's conclusion. However, the defendant escaped, and all attempts to apprehend him failed.
Following that, Justice Halilu revoked the defendant's bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
The trial judge today handed down judgment in which he found the defendant guilty in absentia and returned the property belonging to the nominal complainant, Ishaya Baba, which is located at Plot 1306, Cadastral Zone A05, Maitama Abuja. This decision followed numerous adjournments and the failure to bring the defendant to court.
