Case Summary
Oliver Anidiobi, a former manager at Sterling Bank and account relationship officer for OHHA Microfinance Bank, was given an eight-year prison sentence by the Enugu State High Court in Enugu for offenses involving N219 million fraud.
Full story
After finding him guilty of a 32-count charge, the judge, C.O. Ajah, sentenced him. The defendant, who was charged on May 7, 2019, persuaded the microfinance bank to deposit the alleged N219 million through him by using his position. In order to fool the microfinance bank, he went on to fix the money in a fixed deposit account and counterfeit a deposit certificate, diverting the money for his own use, according to the EFCC's statement.
The EFCC said that Mr. Anidiobi used the funds to construct a five-flat building, buy multiple plots of land along the Enugu-Port-Harcourt Expressway, and start construction on a four-bedroom bungalow in Centenary Estate, Enugu. Additionally, he contributed N65 million to Patrick Nwokike's "Let's Partner with You" Ponzi scheme.
The accused person "did not reject nor question the charges presented by the EFCC," the court stated in his verdict on Tuesday.
He then found Mr. Anidiobi guilty and sentenced him to four years in jail on counts 1 through 14, four years on counts 15–17, and eight years on counts 28–32 without the possibility of a fine. Due to the concurrent nature of the sentences, it is likely that he will serve the largest sentence—an eight-year prison term—first.
