Reason for abandonment: Plagued by mismanagement, corruption, introduction of International Monetary Fund policies and overstaffing, at the time of closure, the airline had debts totaling US$528,000,000. Nigeria airways was succeeded by Virgin Nigeria and the ground facilities were taken over by Arik Air. Nigeria airways ceased operation in September 10th, 2012.
